EDITORS FINAL NOTE

Dear Members:

It is with great pride and humility that I step into the position as president of our Association.

Many thanks to Major Hester , for his leadership during the start-up years and it is my hope that our growth will continue at the brisk pace at which it grew under the "Hester" Administration.

From a humble beginning of 21 Founding Members, we have grown to more that 236 and are continuing to add new members at a steady pace. We must continue this trend over years to come if we are to become a viable and respected Organization.

from where I sit, I see five major objectives for our Association which are: (1) A membership totaling more than 400 by July 1, 2005, (2) A membership composed of at least 60% Active Duty Marines, (3) Sufficient funding and assets to support at least 5 Scholarship awards annually, (4) Development of one new program of service for our members and their families and (5) Recognition as one of the strongest Military Non-profit Associations in our Corps.

I sincerely believe that with your help; the growing momentum of our new Board of Directors, and our collective "Marine Spirit" we can achieve these objectives.

Join me with renewed commitment to recruiting new members and seizing every opportunity to "spread the word" about the Marine Corps Food service Association.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our Marines and their Families and look forward to working with each of you during the years ahead.

Semper Fi!

Rodger Macias

President, MCFSA

SCHOLARSHIP DEDICATION

During dedication ceremonies conducted on July 23 in New Orleans, LA the Associations Scholarship Program was officially dedicated in honor of Colonel William R. “Bill” Lucius USMC Retired who served as the first Director of Marine Corps Food Service from 1951 to 1955 under Major General W.P.T. Hill, Quartermaster General of the Marine Corps. Colonel Lucius directed reorganization of the Marine Corps Food Service Program and established the framework for development of the program well into the twenty-first century. Praised by Commandant of the Marine Corps General Lemuel C. Shepherd for his many contributions to the Marine Corps Food Service Program, he is considered to be the father of Marine Corps Food Service and is revered by all who know him.

Colonel Lucius was with us in New Orleans for the dedication and was presented a Certificate of Appreciation which read:

“This Certificate of Appreciation is presented to Colonel William R. “Bill” Lucius USMC Retired in recognition of your many contributions to our beloved Corps and the Marine Corps Food Service Program, the legacy of opportunity created for your Marines who for more than half a century have followed in your footprints, and as recognition of your unwavering support of our organization, having so graciously permitted us to memorialize our Scholarship program in your honor as the US Marine Corps Food Service Association Colonel William R. “Bill” Lucius Scholarship Program, we the benefactors of your legacy offer our profound respect and appreciation.”

Complete text of the Scholarship Dedication presented by Association Secretary Ed Gray may be found on our website under “Scholarship Dedication.”

He was awarded a grant of $2,000 per year for four years by our Association Scholarship Committee chaired by Dr. Howard J Christenson. Congratulations Shane. We will watch your progress in school with great interest.

We wish you God’s speed and smooth sailing.

We are honored to have been the only US Marine Corps Organization to receive the award for 2003. As one of fourteen selected from 100 competing organizations, the award is a direct reflection of the care and diligence applied to the development of our Scholarship Program by Dr. Howard Christenson and his Scholarship Committee and testimonial to the potential value of our Scholarship Program to our community of Marine Corps Food Service Professionals.

“SSgt JAYNE BURGESS LORAINE PILLOW”

As is often the case good things have a way of sneaking up on us. Such was certainly the case when former SSgt. Jayne Burgess USMC decided to get out her needle and thread and make a beautiful pillow which features a giant Marine Corps Seal on the front and rows of smaller seals on the reverse. Jayne, who for the past fifty years has been married to our Editor and newly elected Director Major Jacques B. Loraine Jr. USMC Retired, made the pillow to be raffled as a fundraiser for our Scholarship Fund.

What a raffle we had! Selling the tickets for an unspecified amount (which ranged from three dollars to three hundred dollars each) in less than twenty minutes we had collected $1,060 for the pillow. And if that wasn’t enough the lucky winner, GySgt Terry Hohn USMC Retired ( Crystal, MN)  immediately returned the pillow to Jayne on condition the pillow would to be carried to our next reunion and raffled again and so on at each reunion until the pillow had generated at least $10, 000 for the Scholarship Fund. Jayne agreed and a new USMCFSA tradition was born.

Jayne now has the pillow back in Sun City, AZ where it is being modified to include Terry Horns name followed by FSA REUNION, the date and amount paid for the pillow in the upper left front corner  and the inscription “Made by SSgt. Jayne B. Loraine 2003” will be added to the lower right front corner.

NEW MEMBERS:

Forty-four must be our lucky number because for the second consecutive quarter we have enrolled that number of new members in our association. As of July 31, 2003 total membership was 231. How many new members have you recruited this year?

COMMENTS FROM THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
We can all take pride and be proud of the growth in the FSA since its'
founding in November 2000. However, there is still much more that can be
accomplished to make the FSA an organization that is a major force in helping
our own membership and the Marine Corps in general.

Current members must get very active in the recruitment effort, seeking out
friends and other Marine Corps Food Service personnel and encouraging them to
join us. The first rule of contact should be "Don't give up on a "NO" reply" .
Instead keep up the effort until you win the individual(s) over and the
individual becomes a FSA member.
Each member should have as a goal "Recruit one or two new members per year" .
If, you establish in your mind and set your goals to obtain at least one new
member a year the FSA will become a major force both inside and outside the
Marine Corps. The Association should have as its' goal -"Double the
membership each Year. "

The membership committee would also like to pick up a couple of individuals
who would be willing to work on this committee. Don't be afraid to step up
and volunteer to help the committee develop a solid membership recruitment
program that will help us to double our membership each and every year. This
is one time to many cooks will not spoil the item.

REUNION PLANNING COMMITTEE : PLANNING FOR THE NEXT REUNION
HAS STARTED -YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!!

The Reunion Planning Committee headed up by Patrick Gibbard wants and needs

input regarding our next reunion and the Reunion committee needs your input
so they can make a recommendation to the Board as to potential Reunion
Location. Please complete this survey as soon as possible but not later than

ITEMS FROM THE FIELD AND ELSEWHERE

Due to the normal activities of the summer, transfer, leave, vacations, etc. a few of our contributors have been unavailable to provide input to our newsletter. Thus, below are a few items to give you either time to think or maybe a laugh or two.

SOME COMMON AND UNCOMMON SENSE (Source Unknown)
I believe that:
  • Our background and circumstances may
have influenced who we are, but we are
    responsible for who we become.
  • No matter how good a friend Is, they're
going to hurt you every once In a while, and
you must forgive them. True friendship
continues to grow, even over the longest
    distance,
  • It's taking me a long time to become the
    person I want to be.
  • You should always 1eave loved ones with
loving words. It may be the last time you see
    them.
  • You can keep going long after you can't.

  • We are responsible for what we do, no
    matter how we feel-
  • Either you control your attitude or it
    controls you.
  • Money is a lousy way to keep score.

  • Sometimes the people you expect to kick
you when you're down will be the ones to
    help you get back up.
  • Sometimes when I'm angry, I have the
right to be angry -but that doesn't give me
    the right to be cruel.
  • Maturity has more to do with what types of
experiences you've had and what you've
learned from them and less to do with how
    many birthdays you've celebrated-
  • It isn't always enough to be forgiven by
others; sometimes you have to forgive your
    self.
  • No matter how bad your heart is broken,
the world doesn't stop for your grief.
  • You shouldn't be so eager to find out a
secret- it could change your life forever.
  • Two people can look at the exact same
thing and see something totally different.

  • Credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

MY RIFLE : THE CREED OF A U.S. MARINE

This is my rifle. There are many like it,
but this one is mine.

My rifle is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master life.
My rifle, without me, is useless. Without
my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle
true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy
who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him
before he shoots me. I will....

My rifle and myself know that what counts
in this war is not the rounds we fire, the
noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make.
We know that it is the hits that count.
We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it
is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I
will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its
parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel.
I will ever guard it against the ravages of
weather and damages as I will ever guard ...
my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart
against damage. I will keep my rifle clean
and ready. We will become part of each
other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and
myself are the defenders of my country. We
are the masters of our enemy. We are the
saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there
is no enemy, but peace!
EDITOR'S FINAL NOTE:
For those of you who missed the 2003 reunion - you were missed.
We truly hope to see you at the next reunion.

The 2003 reunion was a great event - with representation from WWII,
Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the Cold War Era, & current Active
duty Marines. Thus, demonstrating fully this is an organization for
all USMC Food Service to be a part of and participating in growth of
the USMC FOOD SERVICE ASSOCIATION.
