ED GRAY'S "RVN" ALBUM
My tour in Viet Nam began on March 28, 1967, just ten days after Major General Bruno A. Hochmuth assumed command of the 3rd Marine Division (Reinforced). As the Division Food Service Officer and member of the General Staff I often traveled with the General aboard his chopper or on the chase plane assigned to ferry he and his Staff throughout the 3rd Divisions TAOR. With virtually no land based transportation available between camps, we relied almost completely on air transport as a means of travel from Division Headquarters to the outlying camps scattered along the DMZ.
from the coast West to Khe Sanh and the Laotian border and many points in between. Names like Con Tien, Phu Bai, Gia Le, Gia Lin, Camp Carrol, Quang Tri, Camp Evans, Dong Ha, Tan Mai, Colco Island and Hue City became part of our vocabulary at the morning and evening briefings conducted each day by the Division Staff.
During the nine month period leading to his death on November 14, 1967, I and most other members of his staff developed a profound respect for our Commanding General and his "straight forward, in your face leadership style" and mourn the loss of this Marine even to this day..

and we stand unafraid
on a shore no mortal has seen...
'til the last bugle call
sounds taps for us all, it's
